ABB S3 Eprom Information

The ABB S3 controller is fitted with two Eproms on the DSQC 230 Computer board. These give the robot its "identity". This information is not comprehensive but is intended to give a useful reference to work from. The important information is the suffix on the part number typically 3HAA3201-XB/12 where X is the important letter. If you extend or reduce the arm on a IRB 6000 then you will need to change the Eproms so that the arm knows how to compute it's movements otherwise it will not work in linear etc.

Batronix make good, cheap programmers that have nice software. EPROMS are available from RS: 368-8962P for 12 off UV erasable types. These are M27C4001 4Megabit (512k x 8) DIP32W.

Non erasable burn once eproms are much cheaper (£4 instead of £11 each).

Eprom stands for Erasable Programable Read Only Memory. Remember that Eproms are programmed using UV light. The label stuck on the EPROM MUST NOT BE REMOVED or light will damage the EPROM.

To wipe an EPROM remove the label and expose to UV light. Ideally use an EPROM ERASER lightbox with a UV bulb and timer for 30mins+.

In a brightly lit office the chip will corrupt very quickly but will not wipe completely (and become writable again) for a week or two perhaps more.
